Werden sie ohne medizinische Notwendigkeit benutzt, zur Verbesserung menschlicher Eigenschaften und Fähigkeiten beizutragen, dann wird dies als „Enhancement“ bezeichnet. Ein „Neuro-Enhancement“ liegt vor, wenn neurotechnische und neuropharmakologische Eingriffe in das Zentrale Nervensystem mit dem Ziel einer Funktionsbeeinflussung bzw. -verbesserung vorgenommen werden.

Es dürfte von Bedeutung sein, dass die Nutzung von heutigen Neuro-Enhancern in beruflichen Kontexten und in Prüfungssituationen aufzufinden ist. Situationen, in denen Leistung abverlangt wird und in denen Wettbewerbsdruck herrscht.

Folgende Hypothese soll daher aufgestellt sein: Die Optimierung des Gehirns der Individuen in den marktwirtschaftlich organisierten Gesellschaften dient vor allem ökonomischen Interessen, durch die die Arbeitskräfte in den globalen Wettkampf von Unternehmen und Staaten eingebunden werden. Das Ziel ist die größtmögliche Effizienz der einzelnen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter und dadurch der gesamten Einrichtung. Dabei werden das Geschlechterverhältnis sowie die Geschlechterbilder verfestigt.

Diese Arbeit will sich dieser those in mehreren Schritten nähern: Zunächst soll die Neurowissenschaft beleuchtet werden, welche Erkenntnisse sie liefert und wer daran beteiligt ist. Danach werden einige Grundlagen zu Neuro-Enhancern geklärt. Dabei wird es in der gesamten Arbeit um Psychopharmaka gehen, da diese bereits verwendet werden und einfach in der Anwendung und Beschaffung sind. Anschließend wird es ihre konkreten Wirkungen auf Mensch und Gesellschaft angesprochen und es werden die damit zusammenhängenden sozialen und ökonomischen Aspekte ausgeführt. Zum Schluss werden einige Zukunftsaussichten zusammen getragen, die mit der Nutzung der Neuro-Enhancer verbunden sind.
