A novant’anni dalla pubblicazione, los angeles collocazione di Rubè (1921) resta tuttora controversa, quasi l’opera di Borgese risulti in bilico tra tradizione e innovazione, tra eredità ottocentesche e soluzioni moderniste. Di qui il tentativo di ripercorrere in ottica comparatistica lo svolgimento del romanzo, con l’ipotesi che rispecchi un passaggio cruciale della storia letteraria del Novecento nonché un significativo ripensamento dei meccanismi del Bildungs-roman. Dalla trama al personaggio muove dunque dall’analisi di modelli letterari e culturali quali il romanzo di formazione, passa quindi alla Grande Guerra intesa come tragica smentita d’un diffuso orizzonte d’attesa, giungendo infine alla messa in risalto d’una peculiare situazione narrativa – una sorta di discordanza tra il personaggio e le trame che gli si prospettano – di cui cerca riscontro nelle poetiche moderniste. Una rilettura del romanzo attraverso i classici del genere, da Stendhal a Musil passando in line with Svevo e Pirandello, alla luce della quale Rubè sembrerebbe dover entrare di diritto nel canone letterario europeo.
